Applying Foundation!!! (Best Tips)

As a makeup artist, “How should I apply my foundation?” is definitely one of the most common questions I get asked by friends, family and clients, and it is actually one of the hardest to answer. Every single one of us is so different. We all have different skin types, whether dry, oily, or combination, so what works for one person might not work for another. Plus, our skin is constantly changing, so if you haven’t found that perfect liquid foundation yet, try mixing it up a bit; you might find you are better suited to a powder foundation.

There are different brushes and tools you can use to apply foundation. Some brushes will give you more coverage than others. An explanation of the different brush types can be found on another blog post, just search makeup brushes. Let’s get started on how to get a flawless foundation application.

  1. The key to getting that flawless look with your skin is to prep it beforehand. Always start with hydrated skin. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. Wait 5 minutes after prep to let the products really soak in.
  2. Taking a liquid foundation and a foundation brush, start applying your foundation to the skin in downward and outward strokes.
  3. Don’t forget to apply on the eye area too, particularly the eyelids. The color of our eyelids can sometimes make us appear tired, so making sure your skin tone is even all over will instantly brighten your face and widen your eyes.
  4. Apply concealer where necessary, such as on spots or dark circles under the eyes. I believe that most coverage can be achieved with foundation and the right tools, so concealer may not always be necessary.
  5. Blend the concealer using a beauty sponge.
  6. Finally, set the foundation and concealer with a luminous, translucent powder. This reflects the light and will make your skin glow.
