Puffiness can be the result of fluid retention in the tissue under the eyes, which may be exacerbated by eating processed foods with high sodium content, as well as by dehydration. The inflammation under the skin could also be due to an allergic reaction, perhaps to a fragrance in a skin care, cosmetic, or household product. You may even be allergic to the down in your pillow. As with dark circles, a sinus condition also contributes to puffiness under the eyes, which tends to be worse when you wake up in the morning due to accumulation of fluid from the forces of gravity and being still for hours. Once you are up and your head is elevated, the swelling usually begins to diminish.
What To Do:
While drinking six to eight glasses of water per day should prevent dehydration, splashing cold water over your face twenty to thirty times helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. An eye cream that contains rosemary is also effective for treating eye puffiness as well as dark circles. To increase its benefits, refrigerate the cream so that it is chilled when you apply it. You can also apply a thick layer to the semicircular areas under the eyes (but not too close to the lash line) for about ten minutes. Placing cold slices of cucumber or chamomile-tea bags (that have been steeped and then chilled) over the eyes will also take down the swelling. The cold constricts the blood vessels, while both chamomile and cucumber have anti-inflammatory properties. A pack of frozen peas also works well as a cold compress. Another effective solution is the lymphatic facial massage to help move the fluid away from the eyes. This is especially beneficial for people who suffer from sinus pressure that may be contributing to the puffiness. A wonderful and natural way to keep your nasal passage clear and help reduce allergies, no matter the cause of the problem, is with a neti pot. This is an ancient ayurvedic remedy that allows you literally to wash your sinuses with salted warm water. Neti pots can be found in many health food stores or at Walmart and Target.
